The Underground Railroad and the National Register of Historic Places: Historical Importance vs. Architectural Integrity

By Judith Wellman |

"In the past twenty-five years, Americans have demonstrated an avid interest in African-American history. As part of this interest, they have renewed their concern with the underground railroad (UGRR). In 1990, for example, Congress created a national Underground Railroad Advisory Committee. In November 1997, the New York State legislature passed a Freedom Trail Act, making New York the first state in the nation to do so. And in 1998, Congress passed the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Act."
